Taken from A Year in High Heels 10th of May

Today in 1508, Michelangelo started his backbreaking task painting the ceiling at the Sistine Chapel, Rome. It took him years of sitting in hammocks and climbing scaffolding to create, and it was said that for many years afterward Michelangelo couldn't read anything unless he held it over his head. But when the masterpiece was unveiled on Christmas Day in 1541 it was worth all the agony: he had surpassed himself and all his rivals with it. Today it attracts as many as 19,000 visitors a day.
Tip: if visiting you should bring a mirror and binoculars.
